Athena

Goddess of Wisdom, Crafts, and Justified War.  Patron goddess of Athens.

 

When Zeus is told that any child born to his lover Metis (the Goddess of Wisdom) will be smart enough to overthrow him, he swallows the pregnant woman.  She still gives birth, however, and their daughter Athena emerges, full-grown and armed, from Zeus's skull.  

 

Roman name: Minerva

 

Parents: Zeus and Metis, the Goddess of Wisdom.  

 

Spouses, lovers, children: None. Virgin goddess.  

 

Attributes: helmet, owl, aegis (shield or cloak bearing the head of a gorgon)
